Frequently Asked Questions

Q - How deep should I bury the direct burial cable?
A - 4 - 6" of cover for exterior speaker cable is recommended.
We recommend you use speaker cable that is intended for outdoor and in-wall installation. These types of wire come with a smooth casing that makes it easy to run through walls and other tight places. Plus, the casing stands up well against climate changes.

Q - Should I use waterproof connectors?
A - Make sure you are using waterproof connectors to connect your wires outside. They can be found on our accessories page.

Q - What is a 70 Volt Sound System & what is it used for?
A - 70 Volt Sound System is comprised of amplifiers, speakers with transformers, microphones, a telephone system interface and an assortment of wires used as connections. It is generally used for commercial sound applications where there is a necessity for electronically amplifying and distributing sound for the functions of paging, playing music and/or pre-recorded messages to a commercial environment.

Q - Can I connect my outdoor speakers to my receiver in the house?
A - Yes! Exterior speaker units are commonly connected to household amplification. Please refer to your amplifier for correct connection procedures.

Q - How do I connect to my outside speakers?
A - While there are many methods of connecting exterior speakers, most are decided by the personal preference of the installer involved.  If you have any questions about this, please consult a professional for ideas on your particular application.

Q - Can I really put these speakers outside?
A - Yes!  Each of the manufacturers for our outdoor speakers have carefully and specifically designed their outdoor speakers to withstand the affects of water and harsh weather.
There are many stories of actual accidental submersion of outdoor speaker products, and the speakers continue to perform as designed. Never-the-less all outdoor speakers are not underwater speakers and in that regard, technically, must be referred to as "water-resistant" and not "water-proof", unless they are specifically labeled as "submersible".

Q - What about my water sprinklers?
A - Outdoor speakers are also proofed against the intermittent water spray of modern garden sprinkler systems. While we do not recommend you place your outdoor speakers in the direct spray of garden sprinklers, intermittent or accidental exposure poses no problems.

Q -  What about splashes from the pool?
A - Be very careful when considering prolonged exposure to pool or spa waters. These waters contain harsh chlorinated solvents particularly harmful to modern plastics and advanced materials. Our manufacturers have considered this in their outdoor speakers designs, and while prolonged or continual exposure could be harmful, intermittent or occasional exposure poses no problems. Many of our outdoor speakers are also used regularly in marine applications.
